WHY LUMEN COUNSELING?
Lumen was named after the measurement of light. At times we know that the world can be dark. Our world can be dark. But there is always a new day and we want to help others find the light in the darkness.

Meet Hannah Kessler, LCSW
ABOUT ME - I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Carolinas and the owner of Lumen Counseling CLT. That's a fancy word for a real human with experience and training in helping others through difficult situations. Inquiring about therapy is a big first step so thanks for visiting! I have a background in trauma and family therapy but have helped people through a wide variety of issues.
SPECIALTIES - Before I decided to open up my private practice, I worked for several years as a family therapist. I would work with families in deep conflict and help them improve communication, understanding, and connection. I also worked as a child trauma therapist. I would help children - who had suffered from loss/grief/abuse/neglect - process through past experiences, as well as work with their caregiver to provide support in their healing. These experiences led me to opening my practice and specialize with those who are suffering from current or past relationships. I also work with those affected by toxic relationships with faith-based communities, workspaces, or other societal systems. After trauma, difficult situations, or toxic relationships, it is easy to shut down and experience loss of purpose, spiritual questioning, isolation, depression, or anxiety. I don't know what brought you here but everyone has a story and I would love to help you process yours.
APPROACHES - I utilize a variety of approaches and tools to help my clients find healing in their journey. Some of my favorites are:
Attachment-based therapy - attachments with caregivers are cultivated at birth and this approach looks at how your attachment style can affect relationships both positively and negatively throughout your life
EMDR - a very effective type of trauma processing using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements) to help your brain work through difficult memories or beliefs
Existential therapy - based on the idea that you have the answers within you and uses the search for meaning to create self-awareness and self-understanding
Family Systems Therapy - works to understand the family unit, the interconnectedness of family relationships, and how the relationships impact the individual
Internal Family Systems Therapy - works to identify different parts or “sub-personalities” of oneself (i.e. emotions, thoughts, roles, core beliefs) and find inner peace within themselves
Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy uses the idea that thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are interconnected. Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy works to explain how trauma affects the brain/one’s functioning and deeply impacts one’s thoughts/emotions/behaviors. It helps to process one’s story and find healing from their past
I also utilize tools such as the Enneagram to help clients learn about themselves and understand their patterns and processes.
WHAT'S NEXT - If you resonated with any of the above, please reach out and start the process today. I hope to support you on the next step in your journey towards growth and healing. You are not alone!
